Every day hundreds of consumers withdraw money or cash checks then send it to someone overseas through a wire transfer service, only to find out later that the money was stolen or that the check was a fake. These unsuspecting consumers find they’ve become victims of international criminal gangs and are on the hook for the money, under investigation by the police or federal authorities and in trouble with their banks. They’ve been turned into money mules - innocent victims often unknowingly recruited by criminals to launder stolen money and move it out of the country. Sophisticated and efficient, these criminals recruit mules through legitimate job search and online dating sites, social media and online sales.
Important information regarding the compromised cards at Target Stores
Effective: December 31, 2013
In mid-December, Target announced that it experienced a breach involving over 40 million debit and credit card numbers that were used inside their stores beginning November 27, 2013. We have identified just over 400 First National Bank of Durango debit cards which were compromised because of the breach. We are mailing notices to these customers to alert them of the situation.
If you used your First National Bank of Durango debit card at a Target store between November 27 & December 15, 2013, your debit card information has been compromised and you will receive a new debit card with a new number.
For customers with compromised cards only: For your protection, until your new card is received, we are reducing the purchase limit on your existing debit card to $1000 per day; the ATM withdrawal limit will remain the same. Please call us when you receive your new card, so we can activate the new card and cancel the old card. All compromised cards will be cancelled no later than January 31, 2014. If you have given your card number to any merchants that automatically take a payment out of your account, you must contact those merchants when you receive your new card to update your payment information with them.

La Plata Electric Association credit card theft/identity theft alert

La Plata Electric Association has been alerted that attempted credit card theft/identity theft is presently occurring in Durango. Customers are being called by the suspected identity thief, who claims to be from LPEA. This person is saying that the electricity will be turned off if they don't settle up their delinquent account by giving their credit card number over the phone. This is a scam. Do NOT give any information to anyone calling with this claim. LPEA by policy does not conduct business in this fashion and the company does not disconnect its customers on holidays or weekends.
